Michael Gabellini

Michael Gabellini (* 1958 in Pennsylvania ) is a minimalist American architect and interior designer .

biography

Gabellini grew up in Pennsylvania and studied at the Rhode Island School of Design , where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Architecture in 1980 and a Bachelor of Architecture in 1981. After six years with Kohn, Pederson & Fox, Gabellini studied for a year at the London Architectural Association School of Architecture and also devoted himself intensively to Rome. After returning to the USA, Gabellini founded the Manhattan- based architecture and interior design firm Gabellini Sheppard Associates in 1991 , whose partners are Kimberly Sheppard and now Dan Garbowit.

The firm's best-known works are the restoration of the Rockefeller Center and the former AT&T building on Fifth Avenue . Gabellini and his partners designed company headquarters, restaurants and sales rooms for Jil Sander , Giorgio Armani and the luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman, among others .

Gabellini has received several architecture prizes for his work, including three Decade of Design Awards from the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) , with which the interior design association honored ten outstanding and innovative works from 1994 to 2004: for 1997 the one with red Ultimo boutique in San Francisco equipped with walls, his Park Avenue Apartment in New York project (the only living space among the award winners) in 1998 and his implementation of the Jil Sander boutique and showroom in London's Queensberry House in 2002 , a Georgian style building designed by Giacomo Leoni in 1721 . Gabellini has also received commissions from galleries and museums, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and the Marian Goodman Gallery (both in New York ).

Gabellini is married to Nancy Spector, a curator at New York's Guggenheim Museum.

  • from 1993 over ten prizes from the American Institute of Architects (AIA), especially for boutiques and exhibition spaces; including Medallion Award (1993, for Jil Sanders in Paris), Excellence in Design Award (three times in 1998, once in 2000), Honor Award for Interior Architecture (three times in 1999, once each in 2000 and 2007), Interior Architecture Award (2000, 2002)
  • 1997 P / A Prize (Prize from Progressive Architecture magazine , now Architect , for a project not yet built) for a public project in Piazza Isolo in Verona (Italy)
  • 1998, 1999 International Design: Design Distinction Awards for Colleen B. Rosenblat (Hamburg) and the Ultimo Boutique (San Francisco; see above)
  • 1998, 1999 (two times) and 2000 Chicago Athenaem Museum of Architecture and Design: American Architecture Award (for boutiques or showrooms)
  • 1999 American Institute of Architects: Awards for the Ultimo boutique in San Francisco and for the Jil Sander boutique and showroom in Hamburg
  • 2001, 2002 (twice), 2006 International Interior Design Association (IIDA): Interior Design Competition Awards for designs for Jil Sander (Milan, London) and Salvatore Ferragamo (Venice) and the top floor of the Rockefeller Center (New York)
  • 2004 (Awarded): International Interior Design Association (IIDA): Decade of Design Award for 1997, 1998 and 2002 (see above)
