Michael Gross (* 1920 in Tiberias , Galilee ; † November 4, 2004 ) was an Israeli designer , sculptor and concept artist .

life and work

Gross studied from 1939 to 1940 at the Teachers' Training College in Jerusalem and from 1943 to 1945 sculpture with Moshe Fischer at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology in Haifa . From 1951 to 1954 he was in Paris and studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts . In 1954 he returned to Israel in the kibbutz Ein Hod , an artists' village founded by the Romanian artist Marcel Janco near Haifa in the Carmel Mountains . From 1957 to 1960 he was a lecturer at the Bezalel Art Academy in Jerusalem and from 1960 to 1980 at the Oranim Academic College in Kiryat Tiv'on .

Works by Gross are in the collections of several museums, in the Billy Rose Art Garden at the Israel Museum , Haifa Museum of Art in Haifa, Tel Aviv Museum of Art in Tel Aviv and in the Tefen Sculpture Garden .

Gross represented Israel at the Venice Biennale in 1960 , in 1971 he was honored with a gold medal at the São Paulo Biennale and in 1977 with the Sandberg Prize for Israeli Artists of the Israel Museum. In 1992 he was invited to documenta IX in Kassel and in 2000 he received the Israel Prize for his works of design and sculpture in Jerusalem.
