Michael Hirst (* 21st September 1952 in Bradford , Yorkshire ) is an English screenwriter and television series - producer . He is best known as the creator and showrunner of the series The Tudors and Vikings .

Career

Hirst grew up in Ilkley and attended Bradford Grammar School . He studied English and American literature at the London School of Economics , the University of Nottingham and Trinity College, Oxford . Initially active as a writer in an academic environment, the director Nicolas Roeg , who had read one of his short stories , convinced him to work as a screenwriter.

His first work presented in 1988, the screenplay for the film The Deceiver ( The Deceivers ) with Pierce Brosnan is. In 1998, he rose to the BAFTA-nominated screenplay for the period film Elizabeth (with Cate Blanchett ) in the industry tip. Hirst also wrote the script for the 2007 sequel Elizabeth - The Golden Kingdom - who was now committed to historical material.

In the same year Hirst produced the series The Tudors for the US television station Showtime , which deals with the reign of the English King Henry VIII . The commercially very successful series had four seasons by 2010 and was awarded two Emmys . Hirst then developed the series Vikings , published in 2013 on behalf of History Television , about the legendary Viking leader Ragnar Lodbrok and his sons. The series became a huge hit and currently has five seasons. The sixth season started in 2019. Two of Hirst's nine children, the daughters Maude and Georgia , can be seen in the series in central supporting roles.
