Michael Joseph Hoferer (born October 14, 1820 in Großprüfening ; † November 26, 1894 ibid) was a craftsman and served as mayor of the community of Großprüfening for many years . He was also a member of the Society of the Bavarian Eastern Railway and was committed to its construction. He also held the title of Princely Court Counselor and Master Blacksmith.

Life

Besides a sister, he was the only son of the blacksmith and mayor Michael Hoferer (1772–1843) and his second wife Walburga Weber (1791–1869). The mother's family was in close contact with the former monasteryChecking, while the father's family was a well-known family of craftsmen and farmers who had been active for generations in administrative offices, as local judges, local councilors or mayors. Grandfather Joseph Hoferer was already a local councilor. After graduating from the village school he attended the Royal District Trade School in Regensburg and enjoyed a good education. He learned the craft in his parents' workshop. After the death of his father, he took over the family business. Within a few years he had made a good name for himself as a farrier and received orders from the Thurn und Taxis family for the first time . He later received the title of Princely Blacksmith .

From 1860 Hoferer was mayor of the community Großprüfening. He was re-elected several times, including in 1870 and 1875, and remained in office until 1880. During his tenure, the expansion of the bank protection structures on the Danube and the construction of a paved road to Regensburg were pushed. When the construction of a railway line from Regensburg to Nuremberg was first discussed in 1868 , Hoferer was one of the most ardent advocates of the railway. Despite fierce resistance from the village population, the first measurements began in 1869. In the beginning, the construction of a stopping station was by no means planned inprüfunging. It was only through the vehement commitment of Hoferer, who emphasized Großprüfening and the nearby castle Prüfing as excursion and hiking destinations, that the decision was made to build a train station inprüfunging . The new line was officially opened in 1872/1873. Since then ,prüfunging has experienced an economic boom as a summer retreat and excursion destination for the city's population.

From 1872 Hoferer was a member of the agricultural district committee Stadtamhof and Regensburg and the joint stock company of the Bavarian Eastern Railways . As a shareholder and district politician, he was involved in the rapid expansion of the Eastern Railway. It is thanks to his energetic efforts and intervention that Großprüfening and other smaller rainy communities were connected to the rail network.

The establishment of a poor house inChecking and several foundations go back to him. Among other things, he and his wife established the Michael and Franziska Hoferer Foundation in 1866, which supported the care of widows and orphans. Hoferer died on November 26, 1894 in his property in Großprüfening at the age of 74 of a stroke and was buried on November 28 in the family grave at the Catholic cemetery in Dech Betten.

His second marriage on August 6, 1850 with the shipowner's daughter Franziska Riederer had nine children, including the local politician and landowner Johann Baptist Hoferer (1860–1936), the merchant and banker Josef Hoferer (1866–1941) and the merchant Maximilian Alois Hoferer ( 1873-1956).
