Michael Johann Friedrich Wiedeburg (born October 3, 1720 in Hamburg ; † January 14, 1800 in Norden ) was a German organist , music teacher and theologian .

Life

Wiedeburg had extremely musical ancestors. His grandfather was already active as an organist in Berlin , while his father, Matthias Christoph Wiedeburg , was first a music teacher at the court in Köthen and then the court music director in Gera . Michael Johann Friedrich Wiedeburg was born as the second son in Hamburg, but grew up in Aurich , where his father, Matthias Christoph Wiedeburg, was court conductor and cantor at the court of the last East Frisian prince Carl Edzard from 1728 to 1744 . Michael Johann Friedrich Wiedeburg received his first musical training from his father. In 1741 he applied for the position of organist at the Lutheran Ludgeri Church in Norden . But it was not until 1748 that he was appointed to work on the famous Arp Schnitger organ among three applicants . He held this position for almost 52 years until his death. Playing the organ in church services was just as much a part of his job as performing cantatas , mostly composed by himself . The maintenance of the organ was also part of his area of responsibility.

Only a few of his compositions and writings have survived. In 1788, for example, A. F. Winter in Aurich published a "Musical Charts = game ex g major, where you always win a musical piece for the pleasure and practice of the piano player and for the use of the organists in small towns and in the country" . This game falls - despite its title - in the area of so-called dice music . Thereby notes printed on playing cards are put together again and again to new organ pieces according to a (controlled) random principle. Much else is lost and only known by name, such as the second part of the game announced at the end of the preliminary report on this card game. The “East Frisian Choral Book with a Strongly Numbered Bass” from 1774 has also been lost. The "East Frisian Choral Book with a Slightly Numbered Bass" from 1790 is now in the library of the East Frisian Landscape in Aurich. The cantata for the 11th Sunday after Trinity "Beat it with regret and Schmertze", which Wiedeburg submitted on the occasion of his application for the position of organist at the Norder Ludgerikirche, is stored in the State Archives of Lower Saxony.

The most important writings of Wiedeburg are: “The self-informing piano player, or clearer and easier instruction for self-information in piano playing etc., first part Halle 1765”, “Other part of the self-informing piano player, or clear and thorough instruction for self-information in basso continuo etc. Halle 1767 ”,“ The self-informing pianist third part, Halle 1775 ”and“ Increased practical contribution to the self-informing pianist, or twice 24 easy and 24 slightly more difficult preludes for organ and piano , Hall 1778 ”. With a total volume of more than 1600 (!) Pages, Wiedeburg with his "Self-Informing Piano Player" is probably the most extensive piano pedagogical work for beginners. In terms of content, it is essentially based on the writings of Georg Andreas Sorges , Johann Mattheson , Friedrich Wilhelm Marpurg and Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach , whose material he reproduces in a selection that is methodically prepared for use in the classroom.
