Michael Mechel

Michael Mechel (born January 16, 1944 as Karl Michael Balzer , † March 6, 2014 in Leipzig ) was a German actor .

life and career

Karl Michael Balzer worked as an actor even as a child and was already seen in a film adaptation of The Princess and the Pea in 1953 . In 1959 he played the role of the hairdresser's son Karl Horber in Bernhard Wicki's famous anti-war film Die Brücke . After this success, he worked mainly as a theater actor in the following decades, including at the Thuringian State Theater, the Braunschweig State Theater , the Bielefeld City Theaters and freelance in Munich and Hamburg. In 1983 Balzer took on the surname of his wife with Mechel, from then on he also appeared as an actor under this name. Apart from the theater, he only played sporadically, for example in the television series Faust , Großstadtrevier and In allerfreund as well as in the 1998 feature film Hundred Years of Brecht .

Mechel's last station was the Schauspiel Leipzig , where he appeared between 1997 and 2002 under the direction of Wolfgang Engel . He then had to retire from acting because of a back pain. Michael Mechel died in 2014 at the age of 70 after a long illness in a Leipzig nursing home.
