Wolfgang Engel (Intendant)

Wolfgang Engel (born August 13, 1943 in Schwerin ) is a German theater director, actor and artistic director.

Live and act

Wolfgang Engel graduated from high school in his hometown in 1962, but did not study, but began to work as a stage worker at the theater in Schwerin. In 1965 he passed the stage entrance examination without studying acting and then began working as an actor at the Schwerin Theater in 1968 . First assistant directors followed. In the 1970s he worked as a director at the state theaters of Saxony in Radebeul and at the youth theater in Berlin . From 1978 he taught at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Art in Berlin . In 1980 he went to the Staatsschauspiel Dresden as a permanent director , where he made his breakthrough as one of the most important directors in the GDR . First trips to the West followed, where he was allowed to show his productions. From 1983 Engel also traveled to the West to direct, first to the State Theater in Saarbrücken , where other great directors from socialist Eastern Europe such as Adam Hanuszkiewicz were also staging. Engel remained connected to the theater in Dresden until after the political change. In 1991 he went to Frankfurt am Main and became a permanent director at the Schauspiel Frankfurt there . From 1995 to 2008 Wolfgang Engel was the artistic director of the Leipzig Theater .
