Michael Meier-Brügger (born August 13, 1948 in Zurich ) is a Swiss Indo-Europeanist .

Life

Michael Meier-Brügger studied Indo-European and Classical Philology in Zurich since 1967 . In 1973 he received his doctorate there and then assistant. This was followed by postdoc stays abroad in Erlangen , Paris and Harvard from 1976 . After his habilitation in 1980 and a few years as a lecturer at several Swiss universities, Meier-Brügger took over the management of the lexicon of early Greek epic on behalf of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences . He has been running it on a voluntary basis from Berlin since 1996 . During his time in Hamburg, in addition to numerous essays on ancient Greek vocabulary, the two Göschen volumes Greek Linguistics were created .

From 1996 until his retirement in 2013, Meier-Brügger was full professor for comparative and Indo-European linguistics at the Free University of Berlin . In his Berlin research work, the Swiss focused on the classic Indo-European languages Greek , Old Indian and Latin . Meier-Brügger's Indo-European Linguistics (7th edition 2000, 8th edition 2002, 9th edition 2010) has become a standard work in Indo-European studies.
