Michael Victor Meszaros OAM (* 1945 in Melbourne , Australia ) is an Australian sculptor and medalist .

Michael Meszaros is the younger son of the Hungarian-born architect, sculptor and medalist Andor Mészáros and his wife Elizabeth. He attended Preshil Margaret Lyttle Memorial School in Kew and Wesley College in Melbourne. During his school days he received artistic inspiration from his father and learned manual skills, in particular for the design and manufacture of medals. In 1958 he created a medal with him for the Australian philatelist and medal collector John Gartner (1914-1998).

In the 1960s he studied architecture at the University of Melbourne and graduated in 1968. He then went to Rome for a year on a scholarship from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Australia and studied metal sculpture and medal art at the Scuola dell'arte della medaglia. His thesis was the design of the series Twelve Signs of the Zodiac , which he completed on his return to Melbourne. The twelve medals were sold to collectors and presented to the Melbourne Museum by Jennifer M. Shaw in 2011 .

Michael Meszaros worked as a sculptor and medalist in Kew in his father's workshop. As a sculptor, he created over 35 larger commissioned works and over 100 other works. His commissioned works include a bronze relief on the 100th anniversary of Charles La Trobe's death (1975) on the steps of the House of Parliament in Melbourne , a bronze statue by John Pascoe Fawkner (1978) in the National Mutual Plaza, a memorial to William Guilfoyle in the Royal Botanic Gardens of Melbourne, the bronze sculpture The Mayoress in Camberwell, a district of Boroondara City (1982), the groups Man and Lady and Mountain Cattleman (1996) in Mount Buller , a bronze sculpture for Sam the Koala (2011) in Mirboo North in Gippsland and a Bronze relief for the Antarctic explorer Phillip Law . Michael Meszaros is Vice President of the Association of Sculptors of Victoria.

In addition to his work as a sculptor, Michael Meszaros is best known as a medalist. He designed and manufactured over 500 medals, for example for the Royal Australian Mint , the Commonwealth of Australia and other public, institutional and private clients. Created in 1988 to mark the 200th anniversary of the First Fleet's arrival in Australia, the Australian Bicentenary Medal was the second largest in Australian history. For the University of Newcastle , New South Wales , he designed the Dunkley Medal for Outstanding Biomedical Research. He made portrait medals of, among others, the art patron and diplomat Kenneth Myer , the conductor Bernard Heinze , the garden architect Ellis Stones , the botanist Carrick Chambers and the economist Ray Marginson . Michael Meszaros' medals can be found in the British Museum , the Royal Dutch Coin Collection and in private collections in Europe, America, Australia, New Zealand and Great Britain.

Michael Meszaros is married. He lives with his wife Elspeth in the Alphington neighborhood of Melbourne.
