Michael Alexander Moser (born January 26, 1969 in Linz ) is an Austrian Slavist and university lecturer .

Life

Michael Moser studied Russian and German at the University of Vienna from 1987 to 1991 . From 1991 to 1994 a doctoral degree in Russian Studies followed; at the same time he was university assistant at the Institute for Slavonic Studies at the University of Vienna. In 1994 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD (with distinction) . He completed his habilitation in 1998.

In 2005 he was awarded the START Prize , the most highly endowed and most recognized science prize in Austria for young researchers. With the prize money he started the project A Thousand Years of Ukrainian Language History in Galicia . From 2005 to 2006 he was a Shklar Fellow at the Ukrainian Institute of Harvard University . From 2010 to 2014 he was also a member of the Young Curia (since 2016 Young Academy) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences .

Moser's main research interests are Ukraine , the Ukrainian language , sociolinguistics , intra-Slavic language contacts and competing language identities . He teaches at the University of Vienna, the Ukrainian Free University in Munich and the Catholic Péter Pázmány University in Budapest and Piliscsaba.

Since 2013 he has been President of the International Association for Ukrainian Studies / Міжнародна Асоціація Україністики. He is the editor of the Slavic Language History series .

In response to the 2014 Crimean crisis , he emphasized that from a linguistic point of view, the division of Ukraine into a Ukrainian and a Russian area, which has often been described, was not a reality, and he was dismayed by Russia's actions on the Crimean peninsula .

After going through a complex application and evaluation process, Michael Moser was promoted to the rank of university professor at the Institute for Slavic Studies at the University of Vienna with effect from April 1, 2019. On June 23, 2020, he was also appointed professor honoris causa at the renowned Kiev-Mohyla National University .
