biography

After attending Bishop Neuman High School and graduating from Philadelphia Public School in 1961, he worked as a dock worker. He began his political career in 1970 with the election to the House of Representatives from Pennsylvania , of which he was a member until 1976.

After the death of William A. Barrett , he was elected as his successor to the United States House of Representatives in a by-election and was a member of this from November 2, 1976 to October 2, 1980. Investigations into him were opened between 1979 and 1980 as part of the FBI's Operation Abscam . Originally the operation was directed against the trade in stolen goods; but the FBI soon turned it into an investigation into public corruption .

The investigation resulted in the conviction of a US Senator , five members of the US House of Representatives , the Mayor of Camden, New Jersey, members of the Philadelphia City Council and an official from the Immigration and Naturalization Service . Of the 31 politicians targeted by the investigation, various courts besides Myers sentenced Senator Harrison A. Williams ( D - NJ ), Congressmen John Jenrette (D- SC ), Richard Kelly ( R - FL ), Raymond F. Lederer (D- PA ) and Frank Thompson (D-NJ) and the Mayor of Camden, Angelo Errichetti .

While most politicians resigned voluntarily, the House of Representatives had to formally expel Myers. This was done by a resolution of the House of Representatives of October 2, 1980 ( House Resolution 794 ). Myers was the first Congressman since 1861 to be formally expelled from the House of Representatives. Myers himself was sentenced to three years imprisonment in 1981.

In May 1988 he ran unsuccessfully as head of the 39th Ward ( 39th Ward ) in Philadelphia.
