Michael Reiterer

Michael Reiterer (born September 29, 1954 in Innsbruck ) is an Austrian diplomat.

Life

Michael Reiterer studied law at the University of Innsbruck (Dr. jur., 1978) and then earned a diploma in international relations from the Johns Hopkins University , Bologna Center (1979) and from the Institut universitaire de hautes études internationales (HEI) in Geneva ( 1985). In 2005 he completed his habilitation at the University of Innsbruck (Institute for Political Science), where he also taught as a lecturer, for international politics and teaches at various universities. As a member of the European External Action Service (EEAS) , Reiterer was appointed Ambassador of the European Union to the Republic of Korea in February 2017 . Before that, he worked at the EEAS headquarters in Brussels primarily on security policy towards Asia. From January 2007 to the end of 2011 he served as the first ambassador of the EU to Switzerland and the Principality of Liechtenstein . Immediately before that he was Deputy Head (Envoy) of the Delegation of the European Commission in Tokyo . His first task in the European Commission was to organize the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM).

In the Austrian Foreign Trade Service he was the deputy trade delegate for West Africa and Japan, worked at the permanent representations of Austria at GATT and the EU; he was also deputy head of the department for integration and trade policy at the Austrian Chamber of Commerce . In 1997/98 he was a member of the Economic and Social Committee of the EU.

In the OECD , he was co-chair of the joint working group of trade and environmental experts; In 1998 he was appointed a member of a WTO dispute settlement panel (USA-Canada).

He is a corresponding member of the program committee of the European Forum Alpbach , a member of the board of trustees of the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies and of the scientific advisory board of the University of Kobe ( Japan ).
