Michael Renkel (* 1965 in Celle ) is a German guitarist and composer who is also known as an improvisation musician .

Live and act

Michael Renkel started playing the concert guitar at the age of 8 (lessons); From 1990 to 1994 he studied classical guitar at the Hamburg Conservatory , and since the late 1980s he has developed his own style, which includes the preparation of the instrument and advanced playing techniques.

He deals with aleatoric composition, variable form and structure as well as notation . Influences are u. a. John Cage , Morton Feldman , Hans Werner Henze , Helmut Lachenmann , Violeta Dinescu , Derek Bailey , but also old lute music . He is the first musician to alienate the concert guitar using computer patches in a live processing process.

Since 1994 he has composed numerous compositions including Albas for 8 solo instruments, Errorkoerper for electric guitar, and various pieces for concert guitar. His compositions are published by Verlag Neue Musik .

As an instrumentalist, Renkel works exclusively in fixed projects that develop group aesthetics and language over long periods of time, including since 1989 the Duo Activity Center with Burkhard Beins , the acoustic / electronic trio phono_phono , the Ensemble Phosphor u. a. with Axel Dörner , Ignaz Schick , Robin Hayward , Annette Krebs, Andrea Neumann , the Berlin Electric Guitar Unit with Jörg Maria Zeger and Tobias Vethake, as well as in a duo with Sven-Åke Johansson . He appears on various tours and festivals across Europe. B. musique action , nous sons and LEM Festival / Spain, Expozice Nové Hudby or International Art Biennale in Breslau. Since the late 1990s, Renkel has also been involved with electric guitar and live electronics as well as field recordings . Since 2006 he has also been developing sound installations .
