Michael Turnbull (Bishop)

Michael Turnbull (born December 27, 1935 in Wombwell , Barnsley ) is an English bishop of the Anglican Church of England .

Life

After finishing school, Turnbull studied Anglican theology at Keble College , Oxford , where he graduated in 1958. In 1960 Turnbull was ordained a deacon and in 1961 he was ordained an Anglican priest at Manchester Cathedral . Then Turnbull worked as a priest in the Anglican Diocese of Manchester and then moved to the Anglican Diocese of St Albans in 1961 . In 1965 Turnbull accepted a position as chaplain ( adjunct ) to the Archbishop of York , and in 1969 Turnbull switched duties to become a chaplain at the University of York . In 1988 Turnbull was ordained Bishop of Rochester , having become Archdeacon of Rochester in 1984 . Turnbull was Bishop of Durham from 1994 until his retirement in 2003 . He was succeeded in Durham in 2003 by Bishop Nicholas Thomas Wright .

During his tenure as Bishop of Durham, Turnbull was chairman of the Anglican Commission for the Organization of the Church of England and a member of the House of Lords as a spiritual lord . In September 1994, Turnbull hit the headlines of the UK press because of an article in the News of the World newspaper for being convicted of cruising in 1968 . The English LGBT OutRage! Organization outed then 1994 Turnbull and nine other Anglican bishops.

Turnbull is married to Brenda Turnbull and they currently live in Kent . Together they have three children and seven grandchildren.
