Michaela Pavlátová (born February 27, 1961 in Prague , Czechoslovakia ) is a Czech animator.

Life

Pavlátová studied architecture and design at the Academy of Art, Architecture and Design in Prague until 1987 . Her first animated film was Etuda Z Alba in 1987 . Like many of her later films, he devoted himself to a (disturbed) couple relationship. Her third short animation film Řeči, řeči, řeči ... was a worldwide success. At the 1991 Montréal World Film Festival , the film won the Animated Film Grand Prix. Řeči, řeči, řeči… was also nominated in 1993 for an Oscar in the category “ Best Animated Short Film ”. The short film Repete , which was released in 1995 and shows the routine everyday life of three couples represented by means of colors, has “meanwhile also advanced to become a contemporary classic.” In 1995 it received the Golden Bear at the Berlinale for Best Short Film. In close collaboration with Pavel Koutecký , Pavlátová created the film Až navěky , which was released in 1998.

From 1998 to 2002 Pavlátová lived in Prague and San Francisco , where she taught animation at the Academy of Art College and created commercial animations for the Wildbrain company. In 2002 she finally returned to Prague. A year later she made her first real- life feature film Faithless Games and in 2008 her second feature film Kinder der Nacht . From 2004 she worked with Vratislav Hlavatý on the animated film Carnival zvířat , which was released in 2006. The film was Pavlátová's first animated film with erotic and sometimes vulgar elements. She referred to it as a "musical, erotic, animated fantasy" ("musical, erotic, animated fantasy"). In 2012, her short animated film Tram M was released about a "love-mad female tram driver". He is part of the French film project Sexperiences , which is dedicated to the erotic fantasies of women. Tram was featured at the Cannes International Film Festival in 2012 and received the Cristal d'Annecy at the Festival d'Animation Annecy 2012 . In 2013 it was shortlisted for an Oscar in the category "Best Animated Short Film".

Critics wrote that “humor, irony, strong colors and amazing ideas” make Pavlátová's films a delight for the public, but at the same time they “make you think about the dynamics of couple relationships, the family as an institution and the difficult task of living in society. "

Pavlátová lives in Prague and Dolní Lomnice . In 2018 she was appointed to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , which awards the Oscars every year.
