from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Michail Michailowitsch Lavrentjew ( Russian Михаи́л Миха́йлович Лавре́нтьев ; born  July 21, 1932 in Moscow ; †  July 16, 2010 in Novosibirsk ) was a Russian mathematician in the field of mathematical physics .

Life

Lavrentjew was the son of the mathematician and physicist Mikhail Alexejewitsch Lavrentjew . By 1955 he completed his studies at the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics at Moscow's Lomonosov University . Then he was an aspirant of this faculty before moving to the research city of Akademgorodok near Novosibirsk from 1957 . On November 26, 1968 he became a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (AdW) and was there from December 29, 1981 an "academic".

Lavrentiev's scientific activity is closely related to the history of the Siberian regional department of the Academy of Sciences. He was one of the first employees of the mathematical institute, in which he rose from scientific employee to institute director. Over the years he had a fundamental and significant role in solving mathematical problems of geophysics at the computing center of the Siberian regional department of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He headed several chairs for mathematical methods in geophysics and function theory and was Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Mechanics at the Novosibirsk State University (NGU) from 1979 to 1985 . As a scientist of world renown, he founded the largest scientific school for regressive processes and incorrectly posed problems, which gained worldwide recognition. From 1986 to 2002 he was director of the Mathematical Institute " SL Sobolew " in Novosibirsk, which belongs to the Siberian regional department of the Russian AdW.

He dealt with inverse problems and ill-posed problems in partial differential equations in several dimensions (with application to computed tomography and geophysics ).

He died at the age of 78 after a long and serious illness.

Honors

MM Lavrentjew was considered an important promoter of science in Siberia. He was the recipient of high Soviet and Russian awards

MM Lavrentjew also received the prize of the Russian Academy of Sciences named after his father for his series of works «Development of new mathematical methods in relation to mechanics» (2003).
