Mikhail Stepanovich Beskrowny ( Russian Михаил Степанович Бескровный * 1840 in Ujesd Feodosia , Taurida Gubernia , † January 14 . Jul / 26. January  1898 greg. In Saint Petersburg ) was a Russian chess player .

Life

From 1850 to 1857 Beskrowny attended high school at the Richelieu Lyceum in Odessa . He then completed a degree in mining engineering in Saint Petersburg and Paris . He became a member of the chess club founded by Ilya Schumow in 1869 and, along with Schumow, Emanuel Schiffers and Nikolai Petrowski, was one of the best players in Saint Petersburg in the early 1870s. In 1870/1871 he was second behind Schumow at the local tournament, in which nine participants were at the start. He stayed for a few years in Switzerland and France , where in April 1873 he was able to win a monthly tournament in the Parisian Café de la Régence .

In the following years Beskrowny frequented the café on Rue Saint-Honoré. His constant opponent was one of the best French players Jules Arnous de Rivière . Beskrowny also played several games with Albert Clerc around 1879 and reportedly achieved a positive balance. He switched four games with James Mortimer and scored 2-2. Another opponent of Beskrowny in the café was the Englishman George Gossip , with whom he played a match in 1879/1880 in addition to a few free games. Five winning games were enough to win, but the duel was broken off as a draw (+4 = 1 −4) by agreement. At the tournament with the participation of Michail Tschigorin , Simon Alapin and Hermann Clemenz in early 1881 in Saint Petersburg, Beskrowny dropped out prematurely for health reasons. In the correspondence battles Saint Petersburg - London and Saint Petersburg - Krasnoyarsk , which took place in the years 1886/1887, he was a member of the gaming committee.

Beskrowny died on January 14, 1898 and was buried in the Smolensk Orthodox Cemetery in Saint Petersburg. In the obituary published in Vsemirnaya Illjustrazija , it was said that his style was characterized by "splendor and beauty". He was also recognized in short obituaries in foreign magazines, including the British Chess Magazine and the Deutsche Schachzeitung .
