Michel Almeida

Michel de Sousa Fernandes Alcobia de Almeida (born September 28, 1974 in Lisbon ) is a former Portuguese judoka . At the European Championships in 2000 he won the lightweight.

Athletic career

Until 1997, the 1.69 m tall Almeida mostly competed in the half-light weight class, up to 65 kilograms. As early as 1991 he finished seventh at the European Championships . In 1993 he was third in the Junior European Championships. The following year he was second in the Junior World Championships behind the Georgian Giorgi Rewazishvili . Two weeks later he won the silver medal at the European Junior Championships behind the Turk Bektaş Demirel . In 1995 and 1996 he won the Portuguese championships. At the European Championships in 1995 he was eliminated in the second round against the Bulgarian Ivan Netow . At the world championships in Chibahe was eliminated against the South Korean Kim Dae-ik .

At the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta he won his first three fights and then lost to the German Udo Quellmalz in the quarterfinals . In the hope round he was eliminated against the Cuban Israel Hernández and ultimately finished ninth. In 1997 Almeida finished seventh at the European Championships after losing to the Briton Julian Davies in the round of hope . Davies was also his opponent in the round of 16 of the World Championships in Paris and again lost to Almeida.

In 1998 Michel Almeida switched to lightweight, the weight class up to 73 kilograms. In 1999 he won a bronze medal at the Universiade in Palma del Mallorca . In May 2000 at the European Championships in Wroclaw , he defeated the Swiss Olivier Schmutz in the quarter-finals and the French Ferrid Kheder in the semi-finals . In the final he won against the Russian Vitaly Makarov . Four months later, Almeida won his first two fights at the Sydney Olympics . In the quarterfinals he was defeated by the Brazilian Tiago Camilo . In the hope round , he defeated the Algerian Noureddine Yagoubi and then retired from the United States against Jimmy Pedro , placing Almeida in seventh place.

After his career, Almeida became a coach. He initially looked after the Portuguese national team, and in 2014 he switched to the coaching staff of the Canadian national team.
