Michelangelo Garovi or Garove (* 29. September 1648 in Chieri or 3. December 1650 in Bissone ; † 22. September 1713 in Turin ) was a Swiss-Italian architect of the Baroque .

Life

Michelangelo Garovi was the son of the builder Francesco Garovi and Caterina Porra from Bissone. In Turin he trained as an architect. At the age of 21, he entered the service of the Dukes of Savoy and was involved in the original construction of the Venaria Reale hunting lodge . As an engineer, he planned the Palazzo Asinari di San Marzano in Turin (1684–1686).

Works

The buildings for which he was responsible should be mentioned:

  • the Palazzo Morozzo della Rocca in Turin (which was bombed in 1943);
  • the Palazzo Taparelli d'Azeglio in Turin (1683–1689; the facade was later rebuilt in the classical style);
  • the Church of San Martino (La Morra) in La Morra (1684–1695);
  • the completion of the conversion of the Venaria Reale hunting lodge into a royal palace (from 1699);
  • the Piazza Savoia in Turin (1711).
  • His last work was the new University of Turin , which he designed for the Duke of Savoy and King of Sicily, Vittorio Amedeo II. , 1712-1713. It was completed by Filippo Juvarra and Giovanni Battista Ricca from Pambio .
