Michelle Breedt (born June 3, 1967 in South Africa ) is a South African opera and lied singer ( mezzo-soprano ), and professor at the University of Stellenbosch. Since October 2013 she has been working at the University of Music and Theater Munich.

biography

Michelle Breedt successfully completed her vocal studies at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa. After her first engagements at the opera houses in Cape Town and Pretoria, she continued her studies at the Guildhall School in London. In 1990 she came to Germany and became a member of the ensemble of the Cologne Opera Studio and then the State Theater in Braunschweig .

In the summer of 2000 she made her debut in Bayreuth as Magdalene in " Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg " in the production of Wolfgang Wagner under the direction of Christian Thielemann - and sang this role there for the following two years. In Bayreuth in 2006 she sang Fricka in the new Ring cycle , again under the direction of Christian Thielemann . Since 2008 she has also been interpreting Brangäne in Christoph Marthaler's production of Tristan and Isolde there . In 2012 she made her role debut as Venus in Tannhäuser .

From September 2000 she became a member of the ensemble of the Vienna State Opera for three years , was there winner of the Eberhard Waechter Medal and sang a large number of roles during this time: Niklaus, Cherubino, Stephano (in Gounod's "Romeo et Juiette") and Octavian.

Their international activities led them to a. to the Paris Opera . She sang the Octavian at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and in a production in Amsterdam, the Dorabella and Octavian in Dresden . After performances in Lisbon, Ferrara and Modena, she sang this role in a new production in Zurich in 2006/2007. Cherubino in Tokyo was on the calendar in 2005.

Concerts and recitals

Michelle Breedts career includes a lively concert and recital activity. Since 1997 she has been a regular guest at the Schubertiade Festival in Schwarzenberg. She made her debut with a recital at the Salzburg Festival in August 2004 and returned there in 2005. Michelle Breedt can be heard in the Wigmore Hall in London, in the Berlin Philharmonic and Schauspielhaus, in the Wiener Konzerthaus and Wiener Musikverein , as well as regularly in concert halls in Italy and Austria. She has u. a. worked with the conductors Seiji Ozawa , Christian Thielemann, Bertrand de Billy , Helmuth Rilling , Franz Welser-Möst , Jeffrey Tate , Peter Schneider , Philippe Jordan and Gerd Albrecht .
