Michiel Carrée , also Michiel Carree or Michiel Carré , (baptized September 21 , 1657 , born in The Hague ; buried October 5 , 1727 , died in Alkmaar ) was a Dutch animal and landscape painter.

Life

Carrée was born as the son of Franziskus Carrée into a Dutch family of painters who worked from the 17th to the 19th centuries, particularly in The Hague and Amsterdam . His father worked at the court of Prince Wilhelm Friedrich . His older brother Hendrik was also a painter. Carrée also worked first in The Hague and from 1686 to 1692 in Amsterdam. He then worked for a few years in England before he was appointed court painter to Berlin by Friedrich von Prussia in 1697 . He held this position until his death in 1713. His favorite motifs were idyllic landscapes with grazing cattle. In 1713 he returned to Amsterdam and finally lived in Alkmaar from 1725 until his death. Carrée was influenced in his work by Nicolaes Berchem and had specialized in particular in rural scenes with cattle and shepherds. Many of his paintings can be seen in major European museums. He was also a student of Govert van der Leeuw (1645–1688).

family

Carrées parents were probably - since there were at least two people with the name Michiel Carré or Karee, one of whom had died in 1694 - François Carré (Franziskus Carrée, 1630–1669) and Geertruyt (nee Buys, died 1681). He had two sisters Catharina (born 1650) and Antonetta (born 1655) and a brother Hendrik (born 1656).

Carrée was married to Anthonia (nee Steen, 1661-1726) since 1686. At that time the family lived in Amsterdam. In addition to the daughter Alida (around 1686–1747), who worked as a watercolor painter, there was a son Hendrik (died 1726) who was also a painter.
