Middelsfähr is located in the extreme southeast of the urban area on the border with the independent city of Wilhelmshaven and is only separated from the neighboring Schortenser district of Roffhausen by the federal highway 210 .

history

In the Middle Ages there were three crossings over the Maade , of which the one near Roffhausen was the most popular ferry . To secure the ferry connection, Edo Wiemken the Younger had the then existing Roffhausen Castle reinforced in 1495.

The place expanded at the beginning of the 1950s with the settlement of Olympia-Werke AG in neighboring Roffhausen.

In the course of the municipality reform in Lower Saxony , the idea was to incorporate Middelsfähr with the Schortenser district of Roffhausen into Wilhelmshaven. In the event of a reorganization, the business tax of the Roffhausen-based Olympiawerke (around DM 4 million annually) would have gone to the city of Wilhelmshaven in future. For this reason too, the city council of Schortens rejected the separation of the two districts in 1970, although Wilhelmshaven had offered compensation payments.

Sports

The football club FC Middelsfähr , founded on February 2, 1977, merged in the same year with Tus Mariensiel, which had existed since 1966 . The two clubs merged to form the new club Schwarz-Weiß Middelsfähr / Mariensiel on May 31, 1977. Around a year later, the community of Schortens made today's sports facility on Pappelweg available. The club essentially operates the football division .
