Midsummer Madness is a romantic comedy by Alexander Hahn from the year 2007 .

action

Midsummer Madness tells the stories of the American Curt, who is looking for his half-sister, the football fanatic firefighters Lewis and Mike who visit their Latvian colleagues, the Japanese chef Yuki, who is supposed to meet his girlfriend's parents, Leonids, who wants to do the business of his life, and Livias, a rich, cultured lady who wants to bury her deceased husband in Lithuania and who upon arrival realizes that she is in Latvia.

As if that wasn't enough, all these events take place during the Latvian midsummer festival “Janu Nakts”. According to legend, anyone who wants to fall in love can search for the "magical fern" on this night and find their true love. This fern is also the linchpin of the five stories in the film.

Reviews

“An episode film that develops five parallel threads of action around the magical midsummer night in the Baltic States. More or less bizarre protagonists travel through Latvia and experience strange encounters. The film thrives on absurdly funny dialogues, good actors, careful camera work and the charm of the Latvian environment. An entertaining comedy, even if it lacks a solid narrative foundation. "

“Just as confused and bizarre as the difficult description of the content is this comedy by the actor, screenwriter and director Alexander Hahn from Riga, who now lives in Austria. Although he was able to hire a splendid ensemble of actors for his colorfully pieced episode film, which comes across as stylized, incoherent and indecisive, all the characters are so clichéd that they seem in no way credible. Even the best acting doesn't help much. In addition, the 'magic fern' used as a leitmotif is more than artificial and in no way holds the six episodes together. What remains in memory: the sometimes wonderful pictures by cameraman Jerzy Palacz and one or the other successful gag. "
