Mieczysław Świerz

Mieczysław Świerz (born May 25, 1891 in Kraków , † July 5, 1929 in the High Tatras ) was one of the most active Polish climbers at the beginning of the 20th century.

Life

The son of Sophia and Leopold Świerz studied Polish studies and received his doctorate in philosophy from Jagiellonian University in 1917 . He was also a connoisseur of Polish literature. After the outbreak of World War I he was drafted into the Austrian army.

He claimed that the Polish mountaineers from the Tatra Mountains could master more difficult trails. He himself made almost a hundred first ascents, including that of the east face of Mięguszowiecki Szczyt Wielki . He was Gyula Komarnicki's climbing partner for many years . In 1925 he and Janusz Chmielowski published a climbing guide for the Polish Tatra Mountains.

He had an accident at the age of 38 on the west face of Kościelec . He was buried in the new cemetery in Zakopane .
