The Polish Chapel ( Polish Kościelec ) is a mountain in the High Tatras with an altitude of 2155  m npm and is located in Poland .

Location and surroundings

The summit is on the ridge of the Kościelec, which branches off west of the north ridge of the Seealmspitze ( Świnica ) into the Seealm valley ( Dolina Gąsienicowa ).

Below the summit lie two valleys, the Dolina Zielona Gąsienicowa in the south and Dolina Czarna Gąsienicowa in the north.

The Polish Chapel is separated from the summit of the Small Polish Chapel ( Mały Kościelec ) in the west by the Kerbsattel ( Karb ) mountain pass , from the summit of the Lower Seealm Tower ( Zawratowa Turnia ) to the east by the Riegelscharte ( Zawrat ) and from the peak of the Rear Polish Chapel ( Zadni) Kościelec ) through the Kapellenscharte ( Kościelcowa Przełęcz ).

etymology

The name Kościelec is derived from its symmetrical pointed shape, which reminded the shepherds on the Hala Gąsienicowa mountain pasture of a Gothic church roof. Kościół is the Polish word for church . His name can be translated as Kirchenberg .

The summit is known for its distinctive shape and its more than 530 high north face. There are numerous climbing routes on the Polish Chapel. It is very popular with hikers because of the panorama from its summit. It is the only point from which all the mountain lakes of the Dolina Gąsienicowa valley can be seen. Hikers can get to the top of the Polish Chapel in various ways. They are considered difficult. Numerous mountaineers have had fatal accidents on the mountain, including the well-known mountaineers of the Tatra Mountains Mieczysław Karłowicz , Mieczysław Świerz and Jan Długosz . At the beginning of the 20th century, there were plans to bury the remains of the poet Juliusz Słowacki in the Polish Chapel. The Polish Chapel has been an inspiration to numerous artists and poets.
