Mieczysław Zygmunt Jagielski (born January 12, 1924 in Kolomyja , today Ukraine ; † February 27, 1997 in Warsaw ) was a Polish politician of the Polish United Workers' Party PZPR ( Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza ) , who was deputy prime minister from 1970 to 1981.

Life

Jagielski joined the Polish Workers' Party PPR ( Polska Partia Robotnicza ) in 1944 and studied economics at the Warsaw School of Economics SGPIS (now Szkoła Główna Handlowa w Warszawie ) . After the forced unification of the PPR with the Polish Socialist Party PPS (Polska Partia Socjalistyczna), which had been cleansed of democratic forces on December 21, 1948, he became a member of the resulting Polish United Workers' Party PZPR ( Polska Zjednoczona Partia Robotnicza ) . Between 1953 and 1956 he was head of the Central Committee's Department for Agriculture and then from 1957 to 1959 Vice Minister for Agriculture. On February 20, 1957, he became a member of the Sejm for the first time and was a member of it until July 31, 1985.

On October 27, 1959, Jagielski released Edward Ochab as Minister of Agriculture (Minister rolnictwa) and held this ministerial office until he was replaced by Józef Okuniewski on June 30, 1970. He was on the III. Party Congress of the PZPR (March 10th to 19th, 1959) Member of the Central Committee, to which he was until the IX. Extraordinary party congress (July 14-20, 1981). On June 30, 1970 he became Deputy Prime Minister (Wiceprezes Rady Ministrów) and held this office in the governments of Prime Ministers Piotr Jaroszewicz , Edward Babiuch , Józef Pińkowski and Wojciech Jaruzelski until July 31, 1981. At the same time he acted as the successor to Witold Trąmpczyński from October 26, 1971 until his replacement by Tadeusz Wrzaszczyk on October 23, 1975 as chairman of the planning commission of the Council of Ministers (Przewodniczący Komisji Planowania przy Radzie Ministrów) .

On the VI. Congress (November 6-11, 1971) Jagielski was also a member of the Politburo of the Central Committee, which he also until the IX. Extraordinary party congress (July 14-20, 1981). During the August 1980 strikes in Poland , he was chairman of the government commission for negotiations with the strikers at the Gdansk shipyard .

Jagielski has received several awards for his longstanding services and received, among other things, the Order of Builders of People's Poland (Order Budowniczych Polski Ludowej) , the Order of the Banner of Labor (Order Sztandaru Pracy), first and second class, as well as the Officer's Cross and the dignity of the Order of Polonia Restituta (Order Odrodzenia) Polski) .

After his death he was buried in the Powązki military cemetery (Cmentarz Wojskowy na Powązkach) in Warsaw.
