Miehikkälä [ ˈmie̯ɦikˌkælæ ] is a municipality in southeast Finland with 1940 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2018).
It is located in the extreme southeast of the country in the landscape Kymenlaakso directly on the border with Russia . Neighboring communities are Luumäki and Ylämaa in the north, the city of Hamina in the west and Virolahti in the south. Miehikkälä borders Russia in the southeast. However, the municipality has no border crossing, the closest is Vaalimaa in the south.
The place has been an independent municipality since 1887. Today's eastern border of the municipality was drawn in 1944 after Finland was defeated in the Continuation War, when Finland ceded large parts of Karelia to the Soviet Union and Miehikkälä became a border municipality. Miehikkälä was added to the extreme northwest of the municipality of Säkkijärvi , which was dissolved and largely fell to the Soviet Union. One of the sights of Miehikkälä is the Salpalinja Museum, which presents defensive positions from the Second World War .
Miehikkälä Church, a brick-built long church designed by LJ Lindqvist, was consecrated in 1881. It combines various architectural influences, whereby - quite unusual for Finland - neo-Romanesque figures dominate the shape of the building. The altarpiece painted by Väinö Hämälainen in 1930 shows the Descent from the Cross .
