Mihin Lanka ( Sinhala මිහින් ලංකා ) was a Sri Lankan low-cost airline based in Colombo and based at Bandaranaike International Airport . It was the second national airline alongside SriLankan Airlines .

history

Mihin Lanka was founded as a state low-cost airline in 2006 and began operating on April 14, 2007. It was founded to offer cheap flights that are affordable to the local population . The route map initially included destinations in India and Arabia. She flew with two leased aircraft from the Airbus A320 family , one A321 leased from Turkish BestAir and one A320 leased from Bulgarian BH Air , whereby the A321 leased from BestAir had already been brought back by the lessor at the beginning of 2008 due to unpaid leasing installments. Shortly afterwards in April 2008, for the same reason, the only remaining aircraft from Mihin Lanka was brought out of the country by the leasing company and the high-loss company was grounded due to a lack of aircraft. Shortly afterwards, a restart should take place with a slightly changed concept, which was prevented mainly due to the lack of aircraft. The staff was also not paid.

In June 2008, a 19-year-old Airbus A320-200 was found on lease. However, this machine was never put into operation and the lease was canceled again. The low-cost airline's restart was finally carried out on January 1, 2009 with a Boeing 737-800 operated by the French Transavia . Once again, the company was unsuccessful and extremely poor. At the beginning of the year, the seat load factor was just under a quarter, and some flights started without passengers. The loss was a day about one million .

The Boeing 737-800 was replaced in April by a leased Airbus A320-200, which came from SriLankan Airlines and was built in 1991. Another A320-200 followed in the Mihin Lanka fleet at the end of 2009. The low-cost airline's fleet, which had grown to two aircraft in the short term, was reduced to one aircraft shortly afterwards when the Airbus A320, which SriLankan took over in April 2009, was decommissioned. At the end of 2010, however, an Airbus A321-200 was integrated into the fleet.

Furthermore, the airline was an uneconomical company, since the start of operations in 2007, losses of ₨ 8.3 billion are reported for the very small airline by January 31, 2012. Other sources say the airline lost more than 13 billiards.

In September 2016 it became known that the uneconomical airline will cease operations in October 2016. Two of the planes are going to SriLankan Airlines, and the leasing contract for two more is running out anyway.

Destinations

Mihin Lanka flew to a handful of destinations from Columbo . The main focus was on destinations in the Middle East that served workers' traffic, as well as to India . There were also routes to Southeast Asia .
