Mihkel Tiks

Mihkel Tiks (born June 11, 1953 in Tallinn ) is an Estonian writer , journalist and former basketball player .

Life

Mihkel Tiks graduated from high school in Rapla in 1971 and then studied journalism from 1971 to 1978 at the University of Tartu . At the same time he made a career as a top athlete in basketball and won the gold medal at the European Championships in 1970 with the Soviet junior national team. After his active career, he was editor in various ministries for several years, from 1986 to 1988 a member of the editorial team of Vikerkaar and from 1988 to 1991 editor-in-chief of the magazine Teater. Muusika. Cinema . Then he worked u. a. as a freelance journalist, publisher and local politician.

Tiks was one of the founding members of Wellesto and was a member of the Estonian Writers' Union from 1989 to 1995 , from which he resigned at his own request.

Tiks made his debut at the end of the 1970s with a play designed in the sports milieu and remained true to this theme in his later work. His first novel, basketball novel (1985), which depicts the world of high-performance sports, received the most attention . It was partly praised and partly panned by the critics.

The later works are a school novel written together with his son Tanel about the period of stagnation and the author's memoirs, which deal with the period of upheaval in Estonia during the Singing Revolution .
