The Mihm RM 4 was a two-seater amphibian - Glider , designed and built by Richard Mihm. In 1937 a long-term flight world record was set on Sylt .

history

Richard Mihm, as a construction and cabinet maker journeyman in the flight technology department of the Rhön-Rossitten-Gesellschaft (RRG) on the Wasserkuppe with Alexander Lippisch, “started with a wide variety of flight models with a wingspan of up to six meters, gliders from the school glider Pegasus to the high-performance single-seater Fafnir , even some that were powered by engines or even by rockets, continued to build experimental aircraft such as the tailless stork and delta types or ducks , even wind and smoke tunnels and propellers ”(recollections Richard Mihms). After the transition to the German Research Institute for Glider Flying and the construction of the gliders Professor , President and Hans Jacobs ' aircraft , he began with the construction and in 1936 the construction of the two-seater RM 4, which he continued in Hamburg from the beginning of 1937. From February 1, he was employed there as a foreman in the testing department of Blohm & Voss . By plane 1937 started on November 26, Ernst Jachtmann and K. Floßdorf on Sylt near the Red cliffs from the water to one of the FAI recognized permanent record flight of 13 hours 59 minutes in about 100 meters between the turning points Wenningstedt and Kampen pendulum .

construction

The cantilevered all-wood shoulder - wing wing with two-part double trapezoid gull wing in wood rib construction had two-part differential ailerons . The torsion box was made of plywood , the rest was covered with fabric. The completely plywood-covered, watertight hull made of frames and straps had a double floor and a bow coupling. In addition to the water start on the winch , take-off and landing on firm ground was possible thanks to a mountable undercarriage with two 260 × 85 mm wheels with a 1.40 m track width. The cockpit with its staggered seats was spanned by a one-piece hood that could be opened to the rear. The self-supporting normal tail consisted of a pendulum elevator and rudder with horn compensation.
