Michael Wayne "Mike" Coffin (born August 30, 1970 in Los Angeles ) is an Austrian basketball coach and former player of American origin. He is the head coach of the Kapfenberg Bulls . During his playing career he was under contract with clubs in Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Greece. In 2001 he took on Austrian citizenship.

The 1.94 meter tall player studied and played from 1988 to 1990 at Cerritos College and from 1990 to 1992 at Biola University (both in the US state of California ). In both of his Biola years, Coffin triumphed as an outstanding basket preparer and achieved an average of 8.2 assists per match. This put him at the top of the university team's all-time list of the best in this category. Coffin took part in a trial training session with the NBA club Utah Jazz in the summer of 1992 , but received no contract. He completed a year of study at California State University Dominguez Hills in 1993/94 before moving to Europe as a professional basketball player.

He started out in Germany, where he played for Wuppertal in the Regionalliga from 1993 to 1995 . In 1995 he went to the Bundesliga team Kapfenberg in Austria and developed into one of the stars of the league. He played in Kapfenberg until 2004 and became national champion with the team in 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 under coach Michael Stepwieser .

At the beginning of the 2004/05 game year, Coffin had short stops in Greece at Ilysiakos Athens and in Germany at the second division club Düsseldorf Magics before he returned to Austria and joined the Wörthersee Pirates until the end of the season.

From 2005 to 2009 he was under contract with the Swiss national league team Starwings Basel .

Trainer

Between 2009 and 2015, Coffin worked as a coach (initially as a player-coach) for Mattersburg Rocks , in 2012, 2013 and 2014 the team won the second division championship under his leadership. In 2013 and 2014 he was named “Trainer of the Year” of the 2nd Bundesliga by the internet service eurobasket.com . From 2015 to 2017 he was the head coach of the Bundesliga club WBC Raiffeisen Wels , which he led to the Austrian runner-up in 2016.

In the summer of 2017 he was the head coach of Austria's U18 team. At the beginning of the 2017/18 season, Coffin took over the coaching position in Mattersburg again. Also in 2017 he was appointed assistant coach of the Austrian national team. At the end of December 2017, he moved to the head coach position at Kapfenberg Bulls, where he succeeded Michael Stepwieser. Coffin led the team to the cup victory in March 2018 and the championship title in June 2018, and the captain of the championship team was his son Marck .

In addition to his coaching position in Kapfenberg, he took over the post of Austrian national coach from June 2018. In March 2019, the Kapfenberg team won the Austrian cup competition again. The championship title was also defended in the 2018/19 game year. In the summer of 2019 he resigned after a one-year term as coach of the national team.
