The Humana GmbH in Herford , in the infant formula is manufactured, is a subsidiary of the dairy company Deutsches Milchkontor .

history

Humana

In 1950, the pediatrician Heinz Lemke from Herford developed an infant formula that was largely similar to breast milk. This Humana milk was produced and marketed by the Herford dairy. In the 1960s, special food for premature babies and medicinal food were produced.

The Herford dairy , which was located on Gertrudstrasse near the Mathilden Hospital , merged with the Bad Oeynhausen dairy in 1934 , which became the Herford-Bad Oeynhausen eGmbH milk processing cooperative . After the site was badly damaged in a bombing raid in World War II, a new building was erected on Bielefelder Strasse in the late 1940s. After the merger with the Bielefeld eGbmH dairy cooperative (MoBi) , Milchwerke Bielefeld-Herford eGmbH was established on January 1, 1968 . These took over other dairies from Westphalia and the neighboring Lower Saxony , including on January 1, 1969 the Mindener Molkerei eGmbH . On July 1, 1978, the merger between Milchwerke Bielefeld-Herford eGmbH and Milchversorgung Dortmund-Bochum eG (dobomil) to form Milchwerke Westfalen eG (Westmilch) took place . This merged on January 1, 1989 with Milchof Osnabrück eG in Georgsmarienhütte . All of these newly created companies were based on Bielefelder Straße in Herford.

The milk supply Dortmund Bochum eG was from the merger of the October 1, 1968 milk supply Dortmund eG with the milk supply Bochum eG emerged.

From the beginning of 1990 the Westthüringer Milchwerke Erfurt GmbH maintained close contacts with Milchwerke Westfalen eG in Herford. From February 1991 Milchwerke Westfalen eG were co-partners of Westthüringer Milchwerke and then Milchwerke Thüringen GmbH , which emerged in 1993 from Westthüringer Milchwerke Erfurt GmbH and Osterland-Milchhof Gera GmbH .

From the merger of Milchwerke Westfalen eG , Herford, and Westmilch Milchunion eG , Everswinkel, Humana Milchunion eG was created on January 1, 1998 , with its headquarters in Everswinkel . Later, Humana GmbH, based in Herford, was spun off as a separate subsidiary. In 2011, Humana Milchunion merged with Nordmilch GmbH to form Deutsches Milchkontor GmbH (DMK), whereby Humana GmbH became a subsidiary of Deutsche Milchkontor.

Dairy Industry Society Herford GmbH & Co. KG

In 2007 the Milchwirtschaftliche Industrie Gesellschaft Herford GmbH & Co. KG (MIG Herford) was spun off from Humana GmbH as a production company. While the Humana products are produced there, Humana GmbH has only been a sales company since then. The purpose of the new company is to manufacture milk-based baby food, medicinal food and diet products.

At the same time, a joint venture was established between Humana and the baby food manufacturer Hipp , so that MIG became a subsidiary of the sales companies Humana GmbH and Hipp GmbH and Co. Vertrieb KG. Initially, Hipp had a 25 percent stake, later both companies each held 50 percent of MIG.

On December 2, 2016, Hipp took over 100 percent of the company. At the end of 2016 / beginning of 2017, around 500 employees were employed there, some in 4-shift operation, with over 100,000 kilograms of baby food being produced daily as milk powder or liquid food.

While the plan is to set up the Hipp milk competence center at the Herford location, the headquarters of the Humana sales company has been relocated to Bremen.

Products

Regardless of the various mergers, Humana infant formula was still produced in Herford. Other important products were drinking milk as well as dry milk and butter, but also other milk products. This is also where the name Ravensberger Rollenbutter was created, which refers to the Ravensberger Land in which Herford is located. The Ravensberger brand is still used by the Deutsches Milchkontor today, but the items are no longer manufactured in Herford (and therefore not in Ravensberg).

After the merger, the production and distribution of the various dairy products was gradually relocated from Herford to the various other locations. All that remained was the production of Humana infant formula. Finally, Humana GmbH was spun off from the main company as an independent subsidiary.

Market position

Humana baby food is exported to various European countries as well as to Asia and Africa. There is a Humana representative in Moscow, and there are subsidiaries in Italy (Humana Italia SpA), Spain and Portugal. In addition, there are numerous foreign representations and export partners in the sales area. The products are available in a total of 35 countries.

Humana is the market leader in Germany for medicinal foods, cow's milk-free foods, baby water and hypoallergenic ready-made porridge. Diets and nutrients for clinical use are also produced.

Baby milk scandal 2003

In 2003 Humana developed a kosher soy- based ready-made milk formula for the Israeli market . Analysis data of the ingredients were misinterpreted and therefore vitamin B1 was not added. Therefore milk was delivered that contained only 10% of the stated amount of vitamin B1. Three children died in Israel and many more fell ill. As a result, Humana fired four executives. Israeli families were later paid millions in compensation. Proceedings for manslaughter against several employees of Humana in 2008 set against payment of fines.
