The Milyeringidae are a family of fish from the order of the goby-like (Gobiiformes). The family is assigned two genera, Milyeringa , which occurs with two species in cave waters on the North West Cape , a large peninsula on the northwest coast of Australia, and Typhleotris from limestone caves on the southwest coast of Madagascar .

features

The species of the Milyeringidae have a typical, stocky goby shape and are a maximum of 10 cm long. They are mostly pigmentless (one type is brownish) and have no eyes. The head is broad and flattened, the mouth shovel-shaped. Free neuromasts (sensory organs connected to the open water through pores, with which the fish can perceive pressure changes and sound waves) are numerous on the head and arranged in transverse and longitudinal rows. All species of the Milyeringidae occur only in limestone and karst caves .
