The tooth sleeper gobies (Odontobutidae) live in fresh waters in northern Vietnam , in China , Korea , Japan and in the far east of Siberia . Sometimes they go into the brackish water of river mouths. The family used to be counted among the sleeper gobies (Eleotridae).

To distinguish it from other families of the goby-like (Gobiiformes), the following features are mentioned: The shoulder blade is large, the animals have six gill arches (as in the sleeper gobies and the Xenisthmidae ), a lateral line organ is missing. Tooth sleeper gobies are 6 to 24 centimeters long.

The fish live bottom-oriented, feed on carnivore and are substrate spawners . The clutch is guarded by the male.
