Path of Dreams (Original title: The Journey of August King ) is an American drama from 1995 . Directed by John Duigan , the screenplay was written by John Ehle based on his own novel from 1971.

action

The action takes place in North Carolina in 1815 . August King lives alone after the death of his wife and child. He is on his way home when he meets the escaped slave Annalees Williamsburg. Their owner Olaf Singletary offers land and a horse as a reward for bringing them back. King thinks the price is low for a human - but he is concerned about helping Williamsburg. Nevertheless, he allows her to hide in his car. Over time, Williamsburg and King grow closer.

Reviews

James Berardinelli wrote on Reel Views that the film was almost flawless. He offers "strong representations, realistic sets and costumes, intelligent script, solid direction and startling camera work" - the film is impressive in every aspect. Every situation is carefully thought out in order to avoid showmanship or melodrama - nothing appears even remotely artificial. The cameraman, who has already worked with Krzysztof Kieślowski , creates an artistically powerful atmosphere with special color filters. Thandie Newton brings a mixture of dignity and despair as well as subtle eroticism in her role. Larry Drake create a complex character.

The Lexicon of International Films wrote: “A film adaptation of a novel staged in a very leisurely, unspectacular form, which at times threatens to slip into idle state. Nevertheless, she succeeds in a plausible representation of both the harsh living conditions of that time and the hesitant relationship between the two outcast main characters. "

Universal Studios secured the film rights shortly after the novel was published in 1971. Three script versions were written in over 20 years before filming began. The film was shot in North Carolina . The world premiere took place on September 14, 1995 at the Toronto International Film Festival .
