Typhleotris is agenus of the goby-like (Gobiiformes) endemic to Madagascar . They live in limestone caves 250 km north and south of the Onilahy River and near Lake Tsimanampetsotsa on the southwest coast of Madagascar.

features

The species of the genus have a typical, stocky goby shape and are 4.4 to 10 cm long. In contrast to all Madagascan sleeper gobies , two of the species are pigmentless, the third is brown in color. None of them have eyes. The head is broad and flattened, the mouth shovel-shaped. Free neuromasts (sensory organs connected to the open water through pores, with which the fish can perceive pressure changes and sound waves) are numerous on the head and arranged in transverse and longitudinal rows. There are many narrow, conical teeth arranged in several rows in the jaws. The two branches of the lower jaw are close together and can almost touch each other. Numerous cycloid scales cover the body .

Way of life

Typhleotris species are omnivorous and feed on crustaceans , insects, and plankton . Their reproductive biology is unknown.

species

The species can be distinguished mainly on the basis of scaling of the head.
