Mimmo Jodice

Domenico "Mimmo" Jodice (born March 24, 1934 in Naples ) is an Italian photographer and was professor at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Napoli from 1970 to 1996.

Works

Jodice has worked in Italy with numerous representatives of different art movements such as Pop Art , Arte Povera or Fluxus since the 1960s and only became a professional photographer at the age of 30. As a documentarist of conceptual art, Jodice made numerous recordings of artists such as Andy Warhol , Joseph Beuys or Robert Rauschenberg , but later concentrated increasingly on landscape photography and inanimate scenes. In this field Jodice developed into one of the most important photographers in Italy.

In his work, Jodice mainly deals with the representation of Italian and Mediterranean cities and landscapes, which he photographs exclusively in black and white. Time and transience are central themes in Jodice's work. By combining crumbling monuments and sculptures, bright landscapes or modern urban scenarios, he often creates a field of tension between history and modernity and the various aspects of Italian culture through the ages. One example of this is his LOST IN SEEING series. Dreams and Visions of Italy , the effect of which the essayist Alessandro Mauro described as follows: "In Jodice's work silence takes over places and the photographs become metaphysical visions, an interweaving of the signs of the past as they return to inhabit the present". Well known are also Jodice's gloomy recordings of his hometown Naples , for example in the series Naples: une archéologie future .

In addition to numerous exhibitions of his works around the world, Jodice's work is now part of the collections of the Aperture Foundation in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art , the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art , the Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris or the Museo d'Arte Contemporanea in Turin. In 2003 he was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli Prize .

More than thirty books and illustrated books document Jodice's decades of work.
