history
The name Minatare is derived from the Minnataree Indians, a sub-tribe of the Sioux . It means something like "clear water". In 1885 George W. Fairfield opened a "land locator's office" near Sidney, Nebraska , to document the development of new land. The place was originally supposed to be called Tabor . The Minatare Canal & Irrigation Company , an organization to ensure irrigation, was founded in 1887 . In 1926 a sugar factory was established, which stimulated the economy. However, with its closure in 1948, Minatare lost its wealth again. Even today, agricultural products such as corn, sugar beets and cattle breeding are the main industries in the area.
