The Mindanao rat hedgehog ( Podogymnura truei ) is one of the two species of the Philippines rat hedgehog within the hedgehog (Erinaceidae). It is endemic to the Philippines and lives in Mindanao .

features

The Mindanao rat hedgehog reaches a head-body length of 19.0 to 21.1 centimeters and a tail length of 5.9 to 7.3 centimeters. It is thus significantly smaller than the Dinagat rat hedgehog ( Podogymnura aureospinula ) and the large rat hedgehog ( Echinosorex gymnura ). In contrast to the Dinagat rat hedgehog, its back fur is not interspersed with thorns. Other differences are the lack of enlargement of the frontal region of the skull and tooth features.

distribution

Distribution area of Podogymnura truei

The Mindanao rat hedgehog is endemic to the Philippines . Its distribution area is limited to the provinces of Bukidnon , Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur on the island of Mindanao .

The altitude distribution is between 1300 and 2900 meters. The species is best known from the mountains in the center of the island, to which Mount Kitanglad belongs, from the region around Mount Apo and the mountains in the south of the island. Distribution areas in the east of the island are not known, but it is assumed that the species also occurs in the mountainous areas of this island region.

Way of life

Very little information is available on the Mindanao rat hedgehog's way of life. The species occurs mainly in higher-lying older forest stands ( primary forest ) and wet forests. Its adaptability to changed areas is unknown, as most of its habitats are pristine.

Systematics

The Mindanao rat hedgehog is classified as one of the two species of the Philippines rat hedgehog ( Podogymnura ) within the hedgehog (Erinaceidae). Subspecies are not described. The closest related species is the Dinagat rat hedgehog ( Podogymnura aureospinula ), which is mainly found on Dinagat . The first descriptions of Podogymnura aureospinula show that the classification of the two species into their own, then monotypical , genus would also be justifiable due to the characteristics and differences.

Hazard and protection

The species is listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) as not endangered ( least concern ). This is justified by the very regular occurrence of the species within its range and by the fact that the habitats used are not exposed to any acute danger. The Mindanao rat hedgehog is said to be the most common small mammal species on Mount Kalatungan , and it is also common in the higher regions of Mount Apo . The mountain forests are of little commercial value, making deforestation in the range unlikely.
