Mini-DIN plugs have an outer diameter of 9.5 mm or the metal collar of 7 mm and come in seven different versions with different numbers of pins. The variants differ in such a way that the various plugs and sockets cannot be interchanged, which prevents potential damage. There are also sockets outside the standard that are pin-compatible with the standard versions of the plugs. One example is the GeoPort of Apple, the mini DIN-8 connector corresponds to a with an additional pin and both the GeoPort 9-pin connector and the 8-pin standard connector for the serial interface of the Macintosh can accommodate .

The pin numbers can usually be found stamped on the plastic part in which the pins are located, right next to them. The use of a magnifying glass may be necessary.

  1. The image description does not give any details, but the similarity to the 4-pin socket suggests.
