Minyas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Greek mythology , Minyas ( Greek  Μινύας ) was the founder of the ancient city of Orchomenos in Boeotia and the progenitor of the Minyans .

His confusing genealogy names him sometimes as the grandson of Zeus , sometimes as the grandson or son of Poseidon . He is also either the son or father or brother of Orchomenus . Homer did not yet know him, but referred to Orchomenus as the seat of King Amphion as Minyan . He had a daughter Persephone , who is also passed down as Clymene . Minyas is connected to Iolkos in Thessaly through the Argonauts legend. There he was considered the ancestor of the Minyan Argonauts.

In his description of Orchomenos, Pausanias names the tomb and treasury of Minyas, which can be recognized in the Mycenaean domed tomb of Orchomenos .
