Miro Barešić (actually Miroslav; born  September 10, 1950 in Drage near Biograd na Moru ; †  July 31, 1991 Miranje Donje near Benkovac ) was a Yugoslav or Croatian exile terrorist .

Life

Barešic belonged to the right-wing extremist terrorist organization Croatian People's Resistance (HNOtpor) . In 1971 he was involved in the murder of the Yugoslav ambassador Vladimir Rolović (* 1916) in Stockholm and was convicted by a Swedish court for this. By hijacking Bulltofta, like- minded people blackmailed Barešić's release from Sweden, who flew to Spain with the hijackers . He was detained there for 18 months. After a stay in Paraguay , he served his 7-year prison sentence in Sweden, and after his release he went back to Paraguay.

In 1991 Barešić returned to the now independent Croatia and joined the Croatian National Guard . After a short time he died near Zadar under unknown circumstances. His remains were reburied on June 26, 1992 in a grave for those who died in the Croatian War ( Aleji branitelja ) in the Mirogoj Cemetery in Zagreb .

Monument to Miro Barešić in his birthplace Drage. The blood-red colored left hand is clearly visible (August 2016).

On the occasion of the anniversary of his death on July 31, 2016, a memorial was erected in his place of birth. The slightly larger than life-size monochrome stone sculpture was made by the sculptor Ivan Kujundžić . The Montenegrin Foreign Ministry protested against this on August 1, 2016 with a protest note to the Croatian ambassador in Podgorica . Apparently by strangers from the Antifa environment, a hand of the sculpture was painted blood red a few days after it was erected.
