Miroslava Breach Velducea (born August 7, 1962 , † March 23, 2017 in Chihuahua ) was a Mexican journalist who reported on the drug war in Mexico and the influence of drug cartels and was murdered in the northern Mexican city of Chihuahua in 2017.

Miroslava Breach Velducea has worked for several media. She was best known nationwide because she has been reporting as a correspondent in the state of Chihuahua for the national daily newspaper La Jornada since 1997 . She also wrote for the Norte Internet platform . She repeatedly addressed the influence of the drug cartels on the economy, politics and the social fabric in the city of Chihuahua. Breach denounced the inaction of the authorities, the links between politics and crime and the numerous human rights violations. Miroslava Breach Velducea left three children.

Journalist Ricardo Monlui was shot dead in Veracruz state just days before Miroslava Breach's murder . According to data from the Mexican National System for Public Security, 3,779 people were killed in Mexico in the first two months of 2017, up to the death of Velducea.

Breach Velducea was waiting in front of her house at around 7 a.m. on the morning of March 23, 2017 at the wheel of her car for her son, whom she wanted to take to school. According to investigations by the authorities, the unknown killer shot her from several sides. Her body was shot at least eight times. Breach died on the way to the hospital.

Reactions

The Mexican Senate and the House of Representatives observed a minute's silence for Miroslava Breach.
