Misanthrope is a French death metal band from La Ferté-sous-Jouarre that was formed in 1988. The band's name was taken from Molière's piece Le Misanthrope ou l'Atrabilaire amoureux .

history

The band was founded in the fall of 1988 by the guitarist and singer Phillipe "SAS" de l'Argilière. After several line-up changes and the release of a split release together with Torturer in 1991 and the two albums Variation on Inductive Theories (1993) and Miracles: Totem Taboo (1994), bassist Jean-Jacques Moréac joined the line-up. The third album 1666… Theater Bizarre was released in 1995. The title refers to the year Molière's piece Le Misanthrope ou l'Atrabilaire amoureux was created . In September of the same year the guitarist and keyboardist Jean-Baptiste Boitel joined the band. In February 1997 the band recorded their next album Visionnaire in the Swedish studio Fredman . The album was released in 1997. In the same studio and with the same line-up, the group recorded their next album, Libertine Humiliations , which followed in 1998. In Japan , the album was released in April 1999, with the recordings contained two bonus tracks. In May 1999 the band held their first tour, accompanied by their label mates Septic Flesh and Natron . The tour lasted two weeks and took place in Belgium , the Netherlands and France. For this purpose, Frantz-Xavier Boscher came to the band as guitarist, so that de l'Argilière could concentrate completely on the vocals. In March 2000, the 3- appeared CD - Compilation Les épaves ... et Autres Oeuvres Interdites: Recueil d'Écueils , which had a circulation of 1,793 pieces. This included 13 previously unpublished recordings that had been made between 1994 and 2000. Then the band performed at various festivals, where the group played with bands such as Angra , Dimmu Borgir , Gamma Ray and Cradle of Filth . Within five months, the band was working on their next album, Misanthrope Immortel , which was released in 2000. The next album was released in 2003 under the name Sadistic Sex Daemon , which was produced by Anssi Kippo ( Children of Bodom , To / Die / For ). With IrremeDIABLE (2008) and Ænigma Mystica (2013), two more albums followed. During this time the band also played other concerts and performed at the Summer Breeze in 2008 and 2013 .

style

According to Eduardo Rivadavia from Allmusic , the band sings in both French and German. The music is progressive death metal, with the group tending more towards progressiveness than death metal. Robert Müller from Metal Hammer was not impressed by Misanthrope's part on the split release with Torturer. The music is normal Death Metal and "consists essentially of seemingly senseless double bass rumbling with absolutely commonplace riffs , and when a promising break occurs, it is covered up with nihilistic solo whisper". According to Müller, the band mixed a mixture of modern and classic death metal on Libertine Humiliations . The album has a guitar lead reminiscent of Helloween , while a chorus evokes memories of In Flames . Stefan Müller from Metal Hammer assigned the band to Black Metal on Misanthrope Immortel . The keyboard on the album was reminiscent of Dimmu Borgir , while melodies and harmonies showed parallels to Children of Bodom. The band members would play their instruments at a comparatively high level. For Wolf-Rüdiger Mühlmann from Rock Hard , Misanthrope Gothic Metal is a special kind. He considers the term Death Metal worth mentioning because of its timid echoes, but not applicable. Breda Maßmann, who also works for Rock Hard , describes the album Immortel in detail as "a musical high-speed cocktail of ultra-furious heavy riffs including increased solos, escalating drums, lightning-like orchestral elements and keyboard splinters". She lists “melody”, “drama” and “hymn-like” on the positive side, while she has “kitsch epic” on the negative side. The comparison with Cradle of Filth, but in a light version , is most appealing to her. According to Martin Wickler from Metal Hammer , the band would play a mixture of Black, Thrash , Death and melodic Metal on Sadistic Sex Daemon just like on their predecessors . On the album, "[e] in a few blast beats here, some groovy riffs there, dynamic songs and one or the other playful instrumental passage [...] would [invite] to listen".
