The Theological Faculty of the Department of Protestant Theology at the University of Hamburg provides professors to supervise and the Mission Academy a director of studies to accompany the doctoral candidates and their project. The Mission Academy is also a conference center for national and international conferences and seminars. The mission academy is organized as a foundation under civil law . It is led by a board of directors and accompanied by a board of trustees.

history

At the first World Mission Conference in Edinburgh in 1910, the idea of founding a joint European training center for missionaries came up. In 1954 the Lutheran World Federation and the International Mission Council supported the chairman of the German Evangelical Mission Council (DEMR) Walter Freytag in founding the “Mission Academy at the University of Hamburg”. In 1955 it was recognized by the Senate of the University of Hamburg as an affiliated institute of the university.

The Mission Academy has had its headquarters at Rupertistraße 67 in Hamburg-Nienstedten since 1957 . It was originally planned as a joint institute for all German mission societies. It should serve to train the candidates who are to be sent overseas from the seminars of the mission societies. This task lost its relevance in view of the political, ecclesiastical and theological upheavals in the course of decolonization . In their place came a new understanding of partnership work with the meanwhile independent and independent former mission churches. Accordingly, the mission academy became a place for postgraduate training for students, especially from the countries of the global south . Since then, over 100 scholarship holders from the Mission Academy from Asia, Africa and Latin America have successfully completed their doctoral or master’s degrees at the University of Hamburg. Many of them now work in responsible positions in their home countries in churches and universities.

cooperation

The Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD) is an important cooperation partner . It uses the Mission Academy as a conference venue for its events, supports the scholarship program and ongoing operations. The EKD supports the Mission Academy as a church competence center to strengthen ecumenical and intercultural work in the regional churches . As part of the reform process, the Mission Academy is developing into a lighthouse project within the EKD.

The Mission Academy works closely with the Evangelical Mission in Germany (EMW). The cooperation between the two institutions relates to joint work on current topics in ecumenism. Missionsakademie and EMW organize joint conferences and work on publications on mission theological topics. The Commission for Theological Education of the EMW also supports the scholarship work of the Mission Academy.

The Mission Academy also maintains close relationships with Bread for the World , an evangelical aid organization under the umbrella of the Evangelical Work for Diakonia and Development (EWDE). Bread for the World finances an ecumenical head of studies, supports the educational work of the Mission Academy in the field of development-relevant topics within the framework of the ABP program (ABP = Committee for Development-Related Education and Communication) and grants scholarships for study visits to the Mission Academy.

There are also special contacts between the Mission Academy and the Northern Church that geographically surrounds it . The Center for Mission and Ecumenism - Northern Church Worldwide of the Northern Church and the Mission Academy organize joint educational projects and the Northern Church is involved in the scholarship work of the Mission Academy.

The director of studies is responsible for tutoring the scholarship holders and for planning the content of the course. There is currently an executive director of studies , a director of studies and two heads of studies at the Mission Academy:

Publications

Two series of publications have appeared since the beginning of 2013: Studies on Intercultural Theology of the Missionsakademie (SITMA) and Theological Impetus of the Missionsakademie (TIMA). They are available both in printed form from the Missionsakademie for a nominal fee or the retail price and can be accessed free of charge in PDF format on the website.

Programs

In addition to individual scholarship grants, the Mission Academy offers various programs and events on ecumenical and intercultural topics. A new program is Ecumenical Training in Theology ( ÖkuFiT ) for pastors, preachers, preachers, theology students and volunteers from German congregations and congregations of other languages and origins. ÖkuFit is the successor to the African Theological Training in Germany (ATTiG), an ecumenical-theological training for African church leaders of different denominations. For vicariate groups , the Mission Academy, in cooperation with Bread for the World, offers an introduction to the topics of mission, intercultural theology and development policy. Pastors can work and live in the mission academy during a contact study and work on an individual topic from the fields of mission and ecumenism. Vicars can complete a special vicariate at the Mission Academy. For the Reformation anniversary in 2017, the Mission Academy is developing the ecumenical student project GETI`17 - Global Ecumenical Theological Institute, which took place together with the Kirchentag in Berlin.
