description

Detail (2014)

Consisting Lindlarer sandstone produced Mission Cross was founded in 1765 apparently as a foundation of the spouses Lambert Niedenhoff and Margaretha Niedenhoff, born Will , whose name can be proven in early documents from the Beningsfeld settlement . In its representation, the cross follows typical naive peasant patterns. A verifiable interpretation of his inscription (abbreviations) and the relief figure depicted in a niche under a shell relief has so far not been available. Assuming that the shell represents a so-called scallop shell , one could conclude, however, in connection with the limiting flower and fruit ornaments, that the figure represented is James the Elder . Which would find additional confirmation from the pilgrim's staff . Until the 1960s, an altar was built in front of the mission cross during the Corpus Christi procession . The niche in the central block served as the installation site for the sanctuary.

After another restoration, during which the inscription, which was meanwhile barely legible due to weathering, was restored, Pastor Kissel of the nearby parish of St. Elisabeth blessed the cross again in September 2008.

"Anno 1765
Crux missionis."

- Inscription above the shell niche

"LD

Margreita Will
EL DH DK
AC RZ IR GD
Ecce Deus Salvator meus
ISA. IZ. UZ. "

- Base inscription

The mission cross was entered in the list of monuments of the city of Bergisch Gladbach on January 6, 1983 (monument no. A 34).
