Melissa "Missy" Giove (born January 20, 1972 in New York ) is a former American mountain biker . She won gold in downhill in 1994 at the UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships .

Athletic career

Giove was one of the first international female mountain biking stars in the 1990s . In 1993 in Métabief , France , 1996 in Cairns , Australia and 2002 in Kaprun , Austria , she won bronze in downhill at mountain bike world championships. In 1994 she became world champion in Vail, USA . In August 2003 she ended her sporting career.

Drug possession

In June 2009, Missy Giove was arrested by the DEA with nearly 200 kilograms of marijuana and $ 1 million in cash . Giove pleaded guilty and was sentenced on November 23, 2011 to six months of house arrest and five years probation in addition to the already served prison term.

Private

Giove is an openly lesbian . Her nickname is The Missile .
