Mitch Green (born January 13, 1957 in Augusta , Georgia , USA ) is a retired American heavyweight boxer.

Amateur career

As an amateur, Green won the New York Golden Gloves four times (1976, 1977, 1979, 1980), the Intercity Golden Gloves twice (1977, 1979), the Heavyweight Open Championships three times (1977, 1979, 1980) and once the Sub-Novice Heavyweight Championship (1976). The later WBA world heavyweight champion Tony Tubbs is one of the most important opponents he could beat as an amateur, but he also lost to him once.

His record was: 71 fights, 64 wins (51 by knockout ), with 7 defeats.

He suffered five of the seven defeats against the well-known boxers Igor Jakowlewitsch Wyssozki , Marvis Frazier , Greg Page , Tony Tubbs (as mentioned above) and Alfonso Ratliff .

Professional career

On November 8, 1980, the 1.96 meter tall and powerful Green beat Jerry Foley in his professional debut with a technical knockout in the first round. In his 11th fight he won against Floyd Cummings , who was best known for his fight against Joe Frazier , on points. In 1985 he competed against the later WBC world champion Trevor Berbick for the USBA Heavyweight Title . Berbick won the 12-round fight by majority decision (two judges scored 116: 112 for Berbick, while the other scored 114: 114) and thus inflicted his first defeat at your professional on Green. The following year he boxed at Madison Square Garden against the young, unbeaten, aspiring Mike Tyson (record 20-0-0), who had beaten the world-class heavyweight James "Quick" Tillis over 10 rounds on points just 17 days earlier . Tyson won this fight, in which Green had to take many hard hits, also over 10 rounds clearly and unanimously on points. After this defeat, Green resigned from active boxing.

comeback

After a total of 7 years, he made his comeback on February 26, 1993 in Woodbridge , Virginia , USA at the age of 36 and lost the first and only time in his career to technical knockout. Of course, Green was no longer anywhere near world class. In 1994 he faced Melvin Foster for the USA New York State Heavyweight Title and lost this fight. In his penultimate fight he was able to win the vacant WBS Super Heavyweight Title . His last fight took place in 2005 against Billy Mitchem, whom he defeated by classic knockout in the 4th round.
