Mitrophyllum is a plant kind from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek words “mitra” for bishop's cap and “phyllos” for leaf.

The species of the genus Mitrophyllum grow shrubby and reach heights of up to 60 centimeters. The pairs of leaves are fused together in two-thirds to four-fifths. A pair of leaves is usually only slightly fused with one another, the free part being tongue-shaped to triangular.

The bracts of the flower differ from the other leaves. Their petals are yellow, white, white to pink or purple. The nectarium is ring-shaped and surrounds 5 awl pistils .

The capsule fruits, which are usually 5 pods, contain triangular to pear-shaped seeds . Fan cover and closure body can be present.

Systematics and distribution

The distribution area of ​​the genus Mitrophyllum is in the north of the Namaqualand in the South African province of Northern Cape . The plants grow on quartz-covered slopes, often also in crevices.

The first description was published in 1926 by Gustav Schwantes . The holotype is Mitrophyllum mitratum . According to Heidrun Hartmann , the genus Mitrophyllum includes the following species:
