Mitzpe Jericho ( Hebrew : מִצְפֵּה יְרִיחוֹ, German: viewpoint (to) Jericho ) is an Israeli settlement in the West Bank . The settlement was founded in 1977 and belongs to the Mateh Benjamin regional administration .

The international community regards Mitzpe Jericho, like all Israeli settlements in the territories occupied since 1967, as illegal under international law. Israel denies this.

location

The settlement is located in the Judean Desert on one of the last hills of the Judean Mountains before the mountains drop steeply into the Jordan Valley . It is right on Highway 1 , 16 kilometers east of Jerusalem and seven kilometers southwest of Jericho . The Dead Sea is about 12 kilometers from Mitzpe Jericho.

history

Originally, the settlement was to be established on the land directly adjacent to Jericho during the Jewish holiday of Sukkot in 1977. But because the then Defense Minister Ezer Weizmann refused, the settlers were first brought to Mishor Adumim , a place near Ma'ale Adumim , where there is now an industrial area. The then Agriculture Minister Ariel Sharon suggested the current position of Mitzpe Jerichos as the place for the construction of the new settlement. Within the next few days, the settlers erected the first mobile homes and tents to colonize the place. In 1981 the construction of fortified houses began. The original group of settlers included both religious and non-religious Jews. Due to tensions between these two groups, the non-religious part of the settlers split off and founded the settlement Vered Jericho in the valley south of Jericho . Mitzpe Jericho has been a largely religious settlement ever since.
